Earl Brooks (born 1959) is an Americana/Rock songwriter-singer and guitarist. Brooks is known for his crisp guitar style, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and his role as an early Americana Rock musician in Seattle, Washington.
Brooks' career also includes the following projects:
- Wigglin' Taters (1987-1989)
- Blood of the Lamb Band (1990 - 1994)
- Crop Circles (1995 - 1998)
- Ghosts of Wyoming (2007 - 2009)
Early Life
Born in Lusk, Wyoming, to Dale Brooks, an electrical engineer, and librarian Rae Ann. Growing up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Brooks learned to play the guitar that his mother purchased using S&H Green Stamps.
In 1982 he ventured to the nearest big city and settled in the then Bohemian Belltown district of Seattle, where he soon fell into the psychedelic folk scene that was simmering in the Emerald City.
Late 80's in Seattle
Brooks became a pioneer of the Seattle Americana scene. Brooks’ first Seattle band, The Wigglin’ Taters (1985), formed with fellow Idahoan Larry Barrett and the hugely talented Robert Sanville, released two albums on cassette. They also opened for Steve Earle at The Backstage in 1987. Check out this History Link page for more details.
His next project, Blood of the Lamb Band, was a multi-singer/songwriter band that included Nick Vroman and Dave Legg. Blood of the Lamb was a popular Seattle band among the non-Grunge crowd during the late 1980‘s. They released three cassettes.
The most successful band that Brooks led was The Crop Circles from 1995 to 2001, performing at such infamous Americana establishments as Two Bells Tavern, Crocodile Cafe, and The Tractor Tavern. Crop Circles released three CDs:
- Born With A Bad Heart
- The Crop Circles Sing the Songs of Stinky Doolittle
- Home Sweet Home
The Dark Years (2001 - 2007)
Brooks experienced moderate success on the Seattle music scene, but the hard-rocking lifestyle started to take it's toll. Alcohol had an increasing impact on Brooks' career ambitions and personal life, and forced Brooks to confront his personal demons.
Brooks completed his studies in advanced alcohol abuse and got sober in 2007. For a fresh start, he moved to Sacramento, a few demons still lingering.
In 2008, still in Sacramento, he released a CD with Ghosts Of Wyoming titled Snowy River.
In 2010 Brooks finally bested his demons and returned to Seattle to start his solo career. Since then Brooks has been writing, recording and performing as a solo artist.
